Hypnosis or Hypnotherapy? Is there a difference?
Hypnosis is the act of guiding someone into a deep trance state. This deep trance state is commonly known as:
- A deep state of relaxation.
- Hyperfocus & concentration.
- Increased suggestibility.
Hypnotherapy is the practice of hypnosis for therapeutic purposes. Hypnosis is a tool used by Hypnotherapists to help clients overcome a mental or physical condition.
Here are a few ways Hypnotherapists can help clients:
- Grief & Loss
- Insomnia, stress, relaxation
- Health & Wellness (headaches, binge eating etc)
- Relieve chronic & acute pain
- Treat depression, anxiety, PTSD & addiction
- Weight Loss
- Smoking cessation
- Overcome fears & phobias
- Self Improvement
- Relationships & Love
- Success (career & money)
Each of the above categories can include many other challenges or issues.
How does Hypnotherapy work?
When a client is guided into a deep state of relaxation the Hypnotherapist is able to bypass the conscious mind (used 1 – 10% of the time) thereby accessing the subconscious mind (used 90 – 99% of the time). The subconscious mind is the most powerful portion of our brain. The hypnotherapists can get to the cause of the unwanted behaviours & feelings quickly and effectively by accessing the subconscious mind directly.
The subconscious mind is the storehouse for all of our thoughts, emotions, feelings, beliefs, & morals from conception to the here & now. Therefore, everyone actually experiences hypnosis on a daily basis whether they are aware of it or not! For example, hypnosis is the state between waking up & falling asleep thereby being key times to repeat positive affirmations, or to recite important information.
Hypnosis versus Meditation
Hypnosis is a very similar state to Meditation as both are experienced in a deep state of relaxation. Therefore, the difference is:
- with meditation you are one with yourself
- with hypnosis you are guided by a Hypnotherapist into a deep state of relaxation in order to achieve your desired outcome such as healing, discovery, or stress relief.
Myths & Misconceptions
There are several myths & misconceptions. The two biggest ones are:
- You think your mind is going to be controlled by the Hypnotherapist.
- You think the Hypnotherapist is going to find out about your deep, dark secrets.
Both are false! You as the client are always in complete control of your own mind because you are still conscious while in hypnosis (even in Stage Hypnotism Shows). If your subconscious mind senses ‘danger’ it will automatically bring you out of hypnosis.
Hypnosis is a completely safe & effective tool to help clients in overcoming their issues at hand.
Hypnotherapy is just as effective via video-conferencing or telephone as it is in-person. Heck, this means you could stay home & not even have to get out of your pyjamas!
